The sample kit will be on its way to Port Hardy soon. This is a quick note just to keep everyone on the North Island aware of what is going on and when. As this is just the start of proceedings there is not much else to report at this time. Please review the video and sampling instructions found in the main body of this forum if you would like to be involved in the process when it happens. Any comments on the preferred location for sampling would be appreciated. I am thinking of sampling off shore via a boat so that the sample is outside Hardy Bay.

Sampling outside of Hardy Bay would be a good idea due to the log booming operation and last Winter's fuel spill at the sein floats. I suggest sampling in the channel between Thomas Point and Deer Island. Are there other participants up here? Any other suggestions?

Our first sample in Port Hardy will take place this Saturday around 10:00 am so that we are 2 hours in front of the high tide time. Duval Point Area is the suggested sample point. Mike and I and possibly others will be involved in this first sample. We are going to use Mikes boat. It is a recovered Japanese fishing skiff salvaged by Mike after it washed ashore on the west coast of the north island. That was an adventure in itself. Post here if you would like to join us.

I just found this site and the sampling information. Will there be another sampling any time soon? If so, Wouldn't it be better to do it off shore of Coal Harbour?

The channel between Thomas Point and Deer Island is close to the airport sewage treatment plant. We choose a mid point between Duval point and the Gordon group of islands as a representative ocean sample point. If you would like to get involved contact me at lionelinporthardy@hotmail.com
